History of the Fair

Find out about the history of our Fair

The UK has a lovely tradition everywhere with local fairs and Richmond Borough is certainly no exception. Every park and green space lights up at some point during the summer months to bring out burgers and a coconut shy.

The Rotary Club of Twickenham upon Thames ran the Fair on Twickenham Green for the first time lin 2023, renaming it The Rotary Fair.

The HANDS Charities Fair has been running on Twickenham Green on every May Bank Holiday since 1981, other than during the pandemic, and was started by Twickenham resident Maureen Payan. Maureen was a Founder and Trustee of the Charity HANDS (Help a Neighbour in Distress) and she started the Fair as a venue to enable charities and local voluntary groups to raise funds and attract volunteers. Craftspeople and organisations who provided a benefit to the local community were also welcomed as long as they set up a game for the children to play.

Over the years the Fair has developed its reputation as a traditional much loved and well attended meeting point on the Spring Bank Holiday. Please join us next year!
